Between Two Annes

MacArthur, MacDonald, MacKendrick,
MacKinnon, MacLennan, MacPhee,
These are some of the names in my classes this term.
I teach on a small island
Famous mostly for Anne,
The orphan girl
Who lived in a house with Green Gables.
It’s a quiet, peaceful place,
Far from the world’s troubles
And those of the Jews.
But when I drive to work
On a bitterly cold Canadian winter morning
I see smoke belching from a tall chimney
At a power plant a few miles away.
And, unlike my students,
I think of another Anne,
Who died,
Far too young,
Far from here.
