The Denial

If I were God
I would keep a low profile.

Seeing all the harm that might be done
By those who pretend to understand and honor my will
While giving justification to their own desires.

And being given unasked for, unwanted, credit
For deeds contrary to my credo,
Defender of actions committed in my name
For someone else’s sake

And hearing all those prayers I could not
And would not answer

I think that I would become inventor
Compose the most convincing denials
Of my own existence
